Safety
For our guest’s safety Svanen has a automatic connected fire alarm. Fire warners is in every room. Svanen has trained personnel for our own controls of fire security. A duty agreement with G4S Security Systems makes it possible for our guests to contact them during the night when the reception is closed.

History
The Kalmar council built the house in 1966. It was meant as a student’s accommodation for upper secondary school students residing outside of Kalmar municipality. Earlier the Ängö elementary school was situated in this plot.

In 1969 Kalmar was hosting a large conference and when it was lacking hotel accommodations the house was for the first time used for tourists. During the following years the STF (Svenska turistföreningen) ran a youth hostel during the summer months. In June 1975 it was again time for a large conference in Kalmar. A youth hostel host was lacking and STF got in contact with Annelise Knutsson that took over the activity at summer.

The student’s accommodation was a loss for the council and when the manager was retiring in 1982 a contract was made with Annelise Knutsson to lease the house all year round. In the agreement was that she should continue to have student’s accommodation in half of the rooms.
The other half was used for youth hostel and hotel.

In the middle of the 80:s the house was in great need of restoration. The council didn’t want to add money, which led to the decision to sell the house to the Knutsson family. Later the plot of land was also freehold and the student’s accommodation activity stopped in favour for the increased demand of youth hostel and hotel living.

Since 1997 Svanen is a joint-stock company and has during later years gone through several large rebuilds and restorations. Today Svanen has 155 beds in 60 rooms. Since January-2005 Svanen’s agreement with STF has expired and now we cooperate with SVIF (Sveriges vandrarhem I förening).
